Characteristics.
- While not so quick to think, due to all of the conditioning done on his mind, he is incredibly strong and can see in the dark.
- Fond of cigarettes; the team tries to keep them away from him. Except Variel, since he once called her a hipocrit for doing so (she drinks).
- Was born underweight and wasn't expected to survive; his father called him "pup" throughout childhood because of how skinny he was; he now weighs 200 pounds.
- Teased at school for being too skinny, he has now corrected that, through no action of his own; the "zombie" experimentation gave him a lot of muscle, in addition to that he gained when he went through puberty, which was considerable already. He is often in ripped-up jeans and dark shirts. Though his black boots have holes through the soles, he finds this comforting, that they're as "scarred" as he is. Across his chest he has numerous scars, which are slowly fading.
Family.
- Verica Calais (mother; deceased)
- Kenton Cliffe (father; deceased)
History.
An only child, though he was born weak his family treated him like a god, and he was to inherit his father's shoe business when he graduated from school. But snatched from them at the age of 15, just like most of his fellow experimentees, Hugo was introduced to brutal visual and aural conditioning to become his government's shock soldier -- the "zombie," first into battle, and usually first to die. He retained an odd intelligence despite his generally degraded personality, solving puzzles and riddles even when his fellow zombies could barely speak. And he managed to survive all three battles that he was thrown into, killing dozens of enemy soldiers all by himself.
Though he doesn't remember it -- and it's a good thing he doesn't -- he killed his own parents when he and the rest of the "monster" crew was sent to kill everyone in his old town, as the citizens were all suspected (illogically) of treason.
When the government was thrown down, all of the zombies except Hugo were killed. His guards, who were members of the Resistence all along, remembered his dogged personality and gave him to the care of Variel Conner, who started to very slowly use therapy to get him back. And after two years, Hugo's old self began to come back, although he would never truly cast aside the more violent instincts that his mind held onto. They could only be lulled, until such a time as someone made him angry.
About that time he met Minh Harmon, who would later become his best friend, and maybe something more -- they won't be telling.
Personality.
Guarded and cautious most of the time, with a quiet wit and a plainitive sense of justice, the minute Hugo gets adrenaline into his system he begins to act like his old zombie self (instinctive and violent), a shift that is proving very difficult to suppress through Conners' therapy. But most of the time her therapy has worked, and Hugo is a functioning human being, if slightly on the strange side. But he's allowed to be.
Likes/dislikes.
He enjoys classic rock and other, soothing music. Death metal is too much adrenaline; he's not allowed to listen to it. He also likes hot drinks, such as coffee and tea, and practicing on the firing range if he needs to think. Unlike everyone else, he loves snow (zombies were the only soldiers kept away from it unless necessary). He hates rocket-type weapons, saying that they "give him the creeps," and also hates when his hands get cold (which is all the time). He dislikes philosophy, calling it too "sticky," but Conner usually attributes this to his lack of cerebral development.
Fears.
Drugs; especially of the tranquilizing kind.
