Mankind's imagination: boundless, inexhaustible.
It was this imagination that was captured by a group of creatures, not too unlike us, who happened to be more powerful. We, in our somewhat primitive fashion, imagined them fallen from the stars -- cut from a celestial cloth, as grand and great as anything on our planet.
In that time, the mythologies were told, recanted, and written down. By the end of it, the majority of the beings were glad to disappear.
But modern society treats them well, allowing them to blend in with us, since we've forgotten or forsaken them entirely. However, a few number of these creatures -- Eternals, as they sometimes call themselves, or Vetu -- did not transition well. They miss being worshipped and prayed to. Either they fell into deep depression, or find themselves constantly full of rage over what's happened to them.
One in particular, the one they used to call Erebus, king of darkness and shadow, fell into a restless sleep that never ended. He locked himself away in a far corner of the world and began to experience terrible nightmares of what their lives would be like in a few years. He saw visions of horrible creatures rising from the depths, and fires that would rage over the land. He could not wake up from this, no matter how hard he tried. And so, in an attempt to warn someone, he reached out to any and all sensitive minds in the world.
What he got was Magnan Keith, an orphaned mental patient. When she told her psychologist that someone had been talking to her, someone she couldn't see, he wasn't particularily alarmed. But when Magnan went to sleep, she dreamed the same things as Erebus, and in dreaming of them shifted into the world they were in. She cut down monster after monster, screaming for help, but there was none. And when she woke up, she was still covered in their blood and entrails; that was the part that alerted her psychologist.
But on the following day, she was abruptly released from her facility, on the word of a very rich woman named Lola Keith, who had papers that made her Magnan's cousin. Lola turned out to be the one mankind had named Ares, Mars and Loki, who had heard Magnan's story and was there to take her to the rest of the Vetu.
The rest, as they say, is history.
