 Vetu / Eternals

Characteristics

  • Functionally immortal; they can only be killed by another of their kind. Not even a Titan can kill them. (But they can kill Titans.)
  • Blessed, unless otherwise stated, with great strength, health, and keen senses. Physically, they are far superior to humankind.
  • Connected to the world so much that they seem to be in charge of certain parts of it. Certain Vetu can influence certain things (i.e. Poseidon and the ocean).
  • Every Vetu can change their appearance to be whatever they want it, unless cursed by another Vetu.

Lore

None of the Vetu know where they came from or how they were created; they were made into being the same way as their distant cousins, the Titans, who matured faster and captured the hearts and minds of what humans there were at that time. But the Vetu were jealous of the attention, and certain of their number (Ares chiefly) caused squabbling within the Titan ranks; they simply killed off the survivors, with the exception of three Titans, whom they imprisoned in Hades' Underworld. They then became worshipped and feared, as the Titans had been, and so it was for many, many years. But in the last hundred years there was a shift, towards the kindest god, a perceived being even greater than the Vetu. Puzzled, the Vetu had to adjust to the fact that no one prayed to them or built shrines to them anymore.

In modern society, some of the gods were relieved that they had been forsaken, and chose to have simple, isolated lives (i.e. Odin). Some were troubled by the break, falling into depression or fury (i.e. Erebus). And some didn't care at all, becoming celebrities in their own way (i.e. Ares, in the beginning) to fit in with the age.
